ROUBEN MAMOULİAN (1897-1987)
Rouben is a film and stage director. Rouben was born in Tbilisi,
Georgia. Mamoulian spent part of his childhood in Paris. He studied drama at
the University of London. Then, he studied at the Moscow Art Theather. He grew
up in a middle class and cultured family. His father Zachary was a manager of a
bank and his mother Virginia was a
theatrical actress. As a child, his role-model was his mother. He continued his
career on her way. Rauben and Azadia Newman got married in 1945. She was a
painter.
Mamoulian was a successful student. He directed his first play at the
University of London. Mamoulian began his directing career in Broadway. He made
16 films in the 29 years of his cinema career. His most famous films were
Applause, Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde, Queen Christina and The Mark of Zorro.
‘Applause’ was Mamoulian’s first step to free camera and soundtrack from the
constraints of the early days technology. His films took lots of awards. His
seven films won awards and two films were nominated. He won the best film
director award in New York.
I think Mamoulian is similar to Nuri Bilge Ceylan, but Mamoulian is
older than Nuri Bilge Ceylan. They are very successful film directors. Rauben
directed more films than Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Generally, these two director’s
film category is drama. Both of them won the ‘Best Director’ award. Mamoulian
died in 1987 of natural causes at the age of
90 in California.
